Boyhood takes Golden Globe honours

Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age film Boyhood has taken the top honours at the Golden Globe Awards. The movie, which took 12 years to make, won best film drama, with Linklater named best director and Patricia Arquette best supporting actress. British actor Eddie Redmayne won best actor in a drama for his role as physicist Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. British actresses Joanne Froggatt and Ruth Wilson also collected prizes. The awards, which cover both film and TV, saw Froggatt win best supporting actress in a TV series for her role as the maid Anna Bates in Downton Abbey. Wilson was named best actress in a US TV drama for The Affair. Collecting the best director award, Linklater said: “I want to dedicate this to parents that are evolving everywhere and families that are just passing through this world and doing their best. “Bottom line is we’re all flawed in this world. No one’s perfect.” Meanwhile, Redmayne beat competition from fellow Brits Benedict Cumberbatch (for The Imitation Game) and David Oyelowo (for Selma) to the best actor award. On collecting his trophy, Redmayne revealed he cut short his honeymoon to attend the ceremony in Beverly Hills. He said: “I promised her sunshine – it wasn’t so great today – but thanks for giving us a honeymoon we’ll remember.” The actor was the only Briton to win an award in the film categories despite a strong showing in the nominations. His co-star Felicity Jones missed out on the best drama […]

Bryce Dallas Howard: How Ron Howard Influences His 7-Year-old Grandson

Bryce Dallas Howard considers herself “so lucky to have grown up in a family that’s made a living being creative” and for good reason. The accomplished actress, 33, is the daughter of legendary director Ron Howard and one thing that he’s taught her is never be “embarrassed by your creativity,” she told ABC News. “So often people are stopped by this voice in their head telling them they are not good enough or they don’t have a right to have an opinion, that’s just not true,” she said. “There’s a lot of wisdom that my dad and my grandparents and my uncle have been able to impart on me and what I’ve treasured the most is I’ve seen examples in my life of people embracing their creativity, not feeling insecure about their artistic inclinations.” It’s this artistic inclination that the “Jurassic World” star said she and her father have passed on to her oldest son Theo, 7. “He ‘s seen this as well, he’s gone to my dad’s sets, he’s gone to one of my husband’s sets, he sees people being creative,” she continued. “He knows it’s a process, he knows by practicing you get better. That comes from my grandparents who gave that to my dad and my dad to my self and then to my son.” It’s this creativity Howard wants to pass on to others, even those she may not know yet. She spoke to ABC as part of her continuing collaboration with Canon for it’s “Let […]

Dumb and Dumber posts big numbers at US box office

Dumb and Dumber To, the intentionally misspelt sequel to Jim Carrey’s 1994 comedy, has topped the US box office chart on its first weekend in cinemas. The farce, which sees Carrey’s Lloyd Christmas reunited with Jeff Daniels’ Harry Dunne, made an estimated $38.1m (£24.3m) between Friday and Sunday. The film edged out Disney animation Big Hero 6, which made $36m (£23m) in its second weekend in the US and Canada. Space exploration epic Interstellar fell one place to three. Directed by film-making siblings Peter and Bobby Farrelly, Dumb and Dumber To arrived in cinemas almost 20 years on from its hit predecessor. Neither Carrey nor Daniels appeared in a prequel, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, that was released in 2003 without the Farrellys’ involvement. Romantic drama The sequel, which took years to get off the ground, helped Carrey achieve his most successful debut in a live-action film since that year’s Bruce Almighty. “The timing was right for a comedy of this nature, one with broad appeal,” said Nikki Rocco, of distributor Universal Pictures. Big Hero 6’s performance has helped Disney surpass $4 billion (£255 million) in global sales for only the second year in its history. The milestone was reached thanks to the success of such titles as Frozen, Maleficent, Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Jay Leno, the King of Late Night, gets his laugh lines at Mark Twain Prize ceremony

After listening to his friends and fellow comics sing his praises for two hours, Jay Leno did what he does best. He grabbed the microphone and told a few jokes. Accepting the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Sunday night at the Kennedy Center, the legendary host of “The Tonight Show” performed some stand-up — grousing about getting old, reminiscing about his parents and dishing about the office interns. He ended by individually thanking each of the evening’s presenting performers, proving that all the “nice guy” comments were actually true. “I will treasure this. Thanks for the most wonderful night of my life,” Leno, 64, said as he picked up the bust of Samuel Clemens. “This is going on the front of my ’55 Buick.” Leno’s sharp routine followed a festive salute to the King of Late Night, who stepped down in February after 22 years as host of “The Tonight Show.” Comics Jerry Seinfeld, Seth Meyers and Chelsea Handler were among the stars on hand to celebrate the man and his career. “I never really said it to you, because you’re never really listening, but every single time I was on his show, he’d come back and ask me how I was doing, how was life,” said Handler, addressing both Leno and the audience from the stage. “You made a difference in my life. I totally love you. And if you ever need anything from anyone, call Jimmy Fallon.” Fallon, who inherited the NBC show from Leno, adapted […]

Opera company bans ‘Carmen’ for two years over smoking scenes

CANBERRA, Australia — An Australian opera company is being criticized for banning as part of a sponsorship deal performances of “Carmen” for two years because the 140-year-old French opera depicts smoking. West Australian Opera had been considering a 2015 staging of the popular opera about a Spanish gypsy named Carmen who works in a cigar factory. The ban lasts the duration of a 400,000 Australian dollar ($355,000) sponsorship deal with a state government health promotion agency, Healthway. The deal begins in March and was revealed in the media on Wednesday. It has split Australians among those who complain of a nanny state and those who applaud its positive public health message. Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Thursday condemned the deal as “political correctness gone crazy.” Opera is “an exaggeration and if we are running around looking to take offence or looking to spread some politically correct message, just about every opera would be forbidden,” Abbott told Melbourne Radio 3AW. Healthway’s website says it sponsors sports, arts, racing and community event organizations and community groups that encourage healthy lifestyles. Healthway chairwoman Rosanna Capolingua said her board was “quite surprised” by opera’s general manager Carolyn Chard’s offer of a “Carmen” ban. “They brought that to us and we said: ‘fine.’ It was their choice and their decision,” Capolingua said. “It’s a clever move to grab the Healthwise dollars for a couple of years. “People are very aware of the glamorization and depicting of smoking in the movies which is making a big […]
